Volunteer
Gate, Perimeter, Exodus (GPE) volunteering is one of the more hands-on and community-driven ways to participate in Burning Man. GPE is responsible for managing the flow of traffic into and out of Black Rock City, including ticket verification, vehicle searches, perimeter operations, airport support, and Exodus traffic management. Volunteers are often the first and last people participants interact with at the event, making the role an important and exciting part of the overall Burning Man experience.
GPE volunteers work in challenging and often fast-paced conditions and help keep the city safe, organized, and operational 24/7 during build week, event week, and strike. There are many different roles available depending on interests and skill sets, ranging from Gate lane operations and traffic control to logistics, dispatch, and support services. You can learn more about different departments on the Departments Tab. Volunteers often describe GPE as a strong community with a unique culture, teamwork, and camaraderie.
The volunteering process begins by creating a Burner Profile and completing the Volunteer Questionnaire through the Burning Man website. Applicants select Gate, Perimeter, and Exodus as an area of interest. Once your Volunteer Questionnaire is submitted, our Volunteer Coordinator team will communicate with you and help you familiarize yourself with the department and the work we do. New volunteers will complete a “New Blood” training shift, where they learn GPE procedures, culture, safety protocols, and gain hands-on experience alongside experienced team members. After completing training, volunteers can sign up for additional shifts and opportunities throughout the event.
Volunteering with GPE offers participants a deeper connection to the Burning Man community, valuable operational skills, and the opportunity to actively contribute to building Black Rock City.
